NEW DELHI: Argentina were on a 36-match unbeaten streak in international football, they had lowly-ranked Saudi Arabia in their opening match at the FIFA World Cup 2022 and appeared to be on top after Lionel Messi put Argentina ahead with an early penalty.
But little did they know that the match would turn into one of the biggest upsets in the history of the World Cup. Yes, you read it right. Saudi Arabia caused one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history with a 2-1 win over Argentina.
Argentina’s last defeat was by Brazil in the semi-finals of the Copa America in July 2019. They are ranked third, 48 places above Saudi Arabia, by world football’s governing body FIFA.
Saudi Arabia equalised early in the second half through Saleh Al-Shehri, silencing the hordes of Argentina fans.
But just minutes later the Green Falcons were in front when Salem Al-Dawsari rifled an unstoppable shot into the top corner after a delightful piece of trickery.
The football fans across the world took to Twitter to heap praise on Saudi Arabia after the Asian side left the Copa America champions Argentina shocked with come from behind victory.
