Former England captain Naseer Hussain has praised Eoin Morgan for realizing the value of IPL to English cricket.

Reports in the English media suggest that Morgan is set to retire from international cricket imminently after he has struggled with form recently. The England skipper was one of the first few English players to use the platform provided by the IPL.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Hussain praised Morgan for being ahead of his time and realizing the value of the tournament to England cricket.

“He was also ahead of his time, along with Kevin Pietersen, in realizing the value to English cricket of the IPL. First, he helped make better players of the likes of Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, and Liam Livingstone. Then he encouraged them to play in the IPL, where they learned to be even better,” said Hussain.

Hussain also praised Morgan’s leadership qualities, saying that he was calm and calculated on the field. He also said that the 35-year-old had a presence on the field.

The former England Captain pointed to an instance from the 2019 World Cup final to prove his point about Morgan.

“As an on-field captain, he was cool, calm, and calculated. He was icy-cold. Like all the best leaders, he had a presence. And the one time he didn’t get things right, he learned from it. So when it came to Jofra Archer’s super over against New Zealand at Lord’s in the 50-over final in 2019, Morgan made sure he spoke to his bowler after he began with a tight wide,” said Hussain.

Morgan has been England’s most successful captain in the ODI format as he guided them to their maiden World Cup crown. He is also the nation’s leading run-scorer and most-capped player in both the 50-over game and T20Is.
